About John

Greetings, my name is John Luke

My primary work is with adults, developing insight into the source of problems, identifying how core beliefs about the world and self might be hindering progress, and focusing on natural strengths to overcome these barriers with practical skills that generate sustainable change. I have had a broad range of clinical experiences which have equipped me with an effective set of tools, strategies, and insights to help individuals self-develop both quickly and desirably. One of the attributes that makes my practice unique is that at a time when America is highly polarized and people feel unsafe expressing themselves, my practice is one where complete authenticity and freedom of thought are not only permitted but encouraged. The freedom to both be and express yourself freely is critical to self-development and improving mental health.

My approach

I think the most important thing to know about my approach as a therapist is that I do not simply affirm clients, I challenge them; I do this with compassion, insight, and always within the context of the helping relationship and what the client has communicated regarding their needs.

More background

What would be important for someone to know about working with you?

I am a therapist that challenges his clients; I do this with compassion, insight, and always within the context of the helping relationship and what the client is communicating to me regarding their needs.

What is your style/approach to therapy?

My approach is collaborative; this means I work with, not for, clients in making the change they have identified. I use motivational interviewing to locate what change the client is ready to make; then I work with the client, typically using a combination of CBT and psychodynamic techniques, to foster insight and motivation for goal setting and actualization. I do not push clients to do things they are not ready to do. However, I do challenge clients to rethink their approach and insights when they are speaking or behaving in ways that conflict with their stated intentions. In this way, I and the client keep each other accountable to the goals that we can realistically meet together.

Work history

I have worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings; with people in recovery; adults and adolescents, singly and in groups; and I currently work with clients managing mood disorders, anxiety, and those seeking to improve their interpersonal skills. I have also worked closely with people on boundary setting, assertive communication, and managing family and relationship conflict.
