My style: collaborative, warm, candid

“With all the stresses in the world, especially now, you don't have have to face it alone. Let's talk about how I can best support you.”

A lot of us have a hard time asking for help. Fear, shame, or needing to be self-sufficient are feelings that can get in the way of recognizing when we need help--and reaching out and asking for it. My approach to therapy creates a safe place where sensitive, painful or scary feelings can be openly explored without judgment.

About Courtney

A lot of us have a hard time asking for help. Fear, shame, or needing to be self-sufficient are feelings that can get in the way of recognizing when we need help--and reaching out and asking for it. My approach to therapy creates a safe place where sensitive, painful or scary feelings can be openly explored without judgment. We form a partnership to figure out what is going on and how to move forward. I'm actively engaged in our work--it's a partnership, after all--to help you overcome problem behaviors and develop better ways of coping.

My approach

In technical terms, I use relational and psychodynamic therapy approaches. I also use Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, as well as trauma-informed strategies (EMDR). I find this blend useful in alleviating distress and coping with day-to-day challenges but also conducive to creating space for a broader exploration and growth.

About me

I strive not only to reduce acute stress but also help you grow confidence in your ability to heal and to expand your capacity to feel happy, in control, and aligned with your values. With new insight and self-compassion, you can move past places where you feel stuck. I will work hard to ensure that you feel heard, respected and safe.

More background

What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?

I was fascinated at a young age by Marilyn Monroe or Norma Jean Baker; I did a thesis paper in the eighth grade on her. I wanted to know why people made the choices that they did in their life.; I was constantly absorbed in literature that gave me glimpses of the elusive inner workings of other's brains.

What excites you most about the evolving mental health landscape?

Two things excite me about mental health: Mindfulness, evidenced in our behavioral interventions and how our past experiences inform our present existence. The increasing awareness of "what happened to her versus what is wrong with her" or trauma informed dialogue in the society has allowed for normalization of accessing therapy. The third wave of behaviorism incorporating behavioral methods not just cognitive; what we do is our values on display.

Work history

I received my MA in counseling in 2002. I immediately went to work in a group practice serving co-occurring disorders in substance abuse and mental health. I went back to school for a PhD in psychology focusing on psychophysiology and I have never stopped learning even if I did not finish the degree. I have continued to be fascinated by the brain and have enjoyed helping people reach their potential.
