Continuing education for counselors
Continuing education for counselors
Counselor CE planning starts with your exact credential and jurisdiction. LPC, LPCC, LCPC, and LMHC are not interchangeable labels for renewal purposes. Find the requirements that apply to your license, then choose learning that addresses your clinical work and the required categories.
Psychology.com’s planned catalog includes ethics, suicide assessment, AI use, telehealth, documentation, trauma-informed assessment, CBT, cultural responsiveness, and supervision. Approvals are in progress. We do not claim current NBCC approval, state approval, or guaranteed acceptance for any course. Proposed hours and topic classifications remain subject to final review.
Approval and board sources checked on September 11, 2026.
Understand NBCC and state acceptance
The National Board for Certified Counselors, NBCC, operates the Approved Continuing Education Provider program. When considering an offering, check the provider’s approval statement and whether it covers the actual delivery format. NBCC distinguishes home-study and live-event requirements; a proposed collaboration is not proof that an activity has approval. NBCC continuing education provider policy.
NBCC certification requirements and a state license’s renewal rules are separate obligations. For state renewal, use the licensing board’s accepted provider routes, required content, and format rules. California’s BBS recognizes NBCC among several approval agencies. New York uses Department-approved providers for mental health counselors. California BBS, NYSED counselor CE guidance.
An APA or ASWB approval may matter where a board recognizes that route; it is not universal counselor approval. Ask for the course-specific eligibility information when the advertised audience is broader than the list of professions eligible for credit.
Find courses for the decisions you make
Our planned offerings connect professional topics with practical tasks:
- Ethics and Professional Boundaries, proposed three hours, develops reasoning about confidentiality, dual roles, communication, and consultation.
- AI in Clinical Practice, proposed three hours, examines consent, vendor claims, state restrictions, and reviewing generated notes. It does not authorize a prohibited AI therapy workflow.
- Suicide Assessment and Safety Planning, proposed six hours, connects assessment with planning, means safety, and follow-up. Required suicide-training acceptance needs separate confirmation.
- Telehealth Law and Ethics addresses practice authority, consent, privacy, and emergency preparation. A national topic overview should not be assumed to satisfy every state-specific training requirement.
The catalog also includes planned CBT, documentation, cultural-responsiveness, and trauma-informed courses. Match depth to your preparation and caseload. A course on an assessment tool does not automatically establish competence to use every version or deliver a specialized treatment.
Choose the correct state requirement page
- California counselor requirements is for the BBS LPCC pathway. It distinguishes law-and-ethics renewal content from separate training obligations and associate requirements. Official BBS source.
- Texas counselor requirements addresses the LPC rules, mandatory subjects, jurisprudence, and supervisor considerations. Use the counselor-specific rules alongside BHEC’s CE FAQ.
- Florida counselor requirements covers the LMHC renewal pathway and the relevant board’s reporting process. Select the mental-health-counselor category on the official renewal portal.
- New York counselor requirements covers the LMHC registration cycle, boundaries content, approved providers, and self-study limits. NYSED CE source.
Use these pages to build a renewal plan with separate lines for total hours, required subjects, format limits, and additional obligations. Do not substitute a general ethics course for a jurisprudence examination. If you supervise, verify whether a supervision course is an update for established supervisors or an initial qualification program.
Try the free ethics course
Our planned Ethics in Everyday Practice course offers a focused one-hour refresher on everyday confidentiality and communication decisions. Learning, assessment, and any eligible certificate are included without a fee. The planned certificate process uses email delivery after completion requirements are met.
Approvals are in progress for this activity as well. Registration does not earn credit, and the proposed hour should not be counted until your eligibility is confirmed. For free public reading, explore ChatGPT and HIPAA or trauma-informed care. These editorial guides do not award CE.
Check the record before renewal
Keep the final certificate, course description, and applicable approval statement together. Confirm the completion date falls within the required period and the subject designation matches the category you intend to claim. Review reporting instructions independently of certificate delivery. If an offering is unclear, resolve the acceptance question before spending the time or relying on it to close a renewal gap.
