Michigan counselor CE and required training
Michigan LPCs do not have a general continuing education hour requirement for renewal. They do need implicit bias training: 1 hour for each year of the license cycle, or 3 hours for a standard three-year LPC renewal.
The Board of Counseling also requires one-time training in identifying victims of human trafficking. The absence of a general CE quota does not remove these training duties. The board's guide revised January 26, 2026 confirms this distinction.

One hour per year of the license cycle, completed before renewal. Initial applicants need 2 hours within the five years before license issuance.

Training must meet R 338.1771. No minimum hour total is specified; complete all required content.
Format and self-study limits
Where our courses fit. Every Psychology.com course is self-paced and asynchronous: you read and listen on your own schedule and finish with an online exam. Where your board separates home study, self-study, distance or non-interactive CE from live or synchronous CE, our courses fall in the first group. They never count as live, interactive or in-person training.
There is no general CE self-study cap because there is no general CE quota. Implicit bias may be completed through an asynchronous teleconference or webinar, a live interactive webinar, or an interactive in-person presentation that meets R 338.7004.
Which providers count
Choose training that meets the sponsor and content standards in R 338.7004 for implicit bias and R 338.1771 for human trafficking. LARA does not preapprove implicit bias programs. APA, ASWB or NBCC branding alone does not establish compliance with these topic-specific rules.
Implicit bias training must include strategies to reduce health care disparities and pre- and post-training implicit bias assessments. Eligible sponsors include recognized health organizations, state or federal agencies, qualifying board-approved educational programs, accredited colleges or universities, and organizations specializing in diversity, equity and inclusion.
Reporting and audits
Renew through MiPLUS and attest that you have met the training requirements. Keep proof of implicit bias completion for a possible LARA audit. There is no general LPC CE transcript to submit.
Keep implicit bias documentation for 6 years after applying for licensure or renewal under R 338.7004, even when the general CE retention period is shorter.
First renewal
Initial LPC applicants must complete 2 hours of implicit bias training within the five years preceding license issuance and one-time human trafficking training. Renewal implicit bias training is recurring. The general CE-hour quota remains zero at first renewal.
Common questions
Does Michigan require 30 or 40 CE hours for LPC renewal?
Neither. The current counseling guide says no general CE hours are required for renewal.
How much implicit bias training does a Michigan LPC need?
