Nevada continuing education requirements for counselors
Nevada clinical professional counselors need 40 continuing education hours in a full two-year licensing period. Those hours must include 6 in ethics, 4 in evidence-based suicide prevention and awareness, and 6 in cultural competency and diversity, equity and inclusion.
The cultural competency requirement increased to 6 hours effective January 1, 2024. The current statute and board renewal instructions use 6 hours even though NAC 641A.131 still displays older, lower amounts. Use the board's current renewal table when calculating a shortened first licensing period.

What the board requires
Mandated topics
For a full cycle, complete 6 hours addressing ethical issues in clinical professional counseling. Short first periods can reduce this to 2 hours.
Related course: Ethics and Professional Boundaries. 3 hours, self-paced and asynchronous (home study, not a live webinar). It covers 3 of the 6 hours required, so you would need additional hours elsewhere. Not yet CE-approved for this license: until an approval is confirmed, it counts as professional development only.
Complete 4 hours within the full 40-hour requirement. This is a two-year renewal requirement, not a six-year requirement. Short first periods can reduce this to 2 hours.
Related course: Suicide Assessment and Safety Planning. 6 hours, self-paced and asynchronous (home study, not a live webinar). Not yet CE-approved for this license: until an approval is confirmed, it counts as professional development only.
NRS 641A.260 requires 6 hours. The board identifies January 1, 2024, as the effective date of the increase and requires all 6 hours even for prorated first renewals. Training must address the populations and research-based content specified in the statute.
Related course: Cultural Responsiveness in Clinical Practice. 3 hours, self-paced and asynchronous (home study, not a live webinar). It covers 3 of the 6 hours required, so you would need additional hours elsewhere. Not yet CE-approved for this license: until an approval is confirmed, it counts as professional development only.
Approved supervisors must include 2 hours on supervision in their field within their applicable CE total.
Related course: Supervisor Ethics and Effective Supervision. 6 hours, self-paced and asynchronous (home study, not a live webinar). Not yet CE-approved for this license: until an approval is confirmed, it counts as professional development only.
Format and self-study limits
Where our courses fit. Every Psychology.com course is self-paced and asynchronous: you read and listen on your own schedule and finish with an online exam. Where your board separates home study, self-study, distance or non-interactive CE from live or synchronous CE, our courses fall in the first group. They never count as live, interactive or in-person training.
No more than 20 hours may be noninteractive distance education. For a 40-hour cycle, at least 20 hours must therefore be interactive. Live online training can qualify when participants can interact with the facilitator or others in the class; reading material and taking an assessment is noninteractive.
The same 20-hour noninteractive ceiling applies to prorated first renewals. A 30-hour first requirement needs at least 10 interactive hours; a 20-hour or 10-hour first requirement may be entirely noninteractive.
Which providers count
Use a board-approved course or an approved continuing education provider under NAC 641A.121 through 641A.126. Verify the board registration number, approved hours and relevant topic. These rules do not grant blanket acceptance solely because a provider advertises APA, ASWB or NBCC approval. Suicide prevention course approval is reserved to the board rather than delegated to staff.
Reporting and audits
Renew through the board's online licensing system, which uses Certemy. Submit the required CE compliance affidavit and supply supporting records when requested. Keep CE documentation for at least 3 years after executing the affidavit, as required by NAC 641A.131.
First renewal
For renewal at the end of December 31, 2027, the board's current table requires 40 hours if initially licensed on or before June 30, 2026; 30 hours if licensed July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2026; 20 hours if licensed January 1, 2027, through June 30, 2027; and 10 hours if licensed July 1, 2027, through December 31, 2027.
The 40-hour and 30-hour groups need 6 ethics, 4 suicide prevention and 6 cultural competency hours. The 20-hour and 10-hour groups need 2 ethics, 2 suicide prevention and 6 cultural competency hours. Approved supervisors must also meet their 2-hour supervision requirement within the applicable total. These are full-license rules; intern licenses follow separate provisions.
Common questions
How many CE hours does a Nevada CPC need?
A full two-year cycle requires 40 hours, including 6 ethics, 4 suicide prevention and 6 cultural competency hours. Board-approved supervisors also need 2 supervision hours within the total.
Can I complete Nevada counselor CE online?
Yes, but no more than 20 hours can be noninteractive. For the full 40-hour cycle, combine eligible self-study with at least 20 interactive hours, which may include live online classes with interaction.
Is Nevada suicide prevention training due every six years?
No. CPCs need 4 hours each two-year renewal cycle. The board allows 2 hours for the shorter 20-hour and 10-hour first-renewal categories.
Is cultural competency four hours or six hours?
Six. The current statute and board instructions require 6 hours, effective January 1, 2024. The older four-hour language still visible in the administrative code is not the current statutory minimum.
When is the next Nevada CPC renewal deadline?
The board's current schedule covers CE earned January 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027. Renew by December 31, 2027, before the January 1, 2028, expiration, and confirm your individual license record.
