How the result is read

Your result is read from your digit span against 4 ranges. Higher is better. These ranges are educational reference points from the task design, not clinical norms.

How the score is calculated

The task begins with a sequence of three digits, shown one at a time at a steady pace of about one digit per second, then hidden. You type the digits back in the same order you saw them. Answer correctly and the next sequence grows by one digit; answer incorrectly and you get a second sequence at the same length before the task moves on or ends.

The task stops after two missed sequences at the same length, or once you successfully recall a ten-digit sequence, whichever happens first. Your span, the headline number, is the longest sequence length you recalled correctly and completely. We also show how many sequences you got right out of the total you attempted, so you can see your overall accuracy alongside the single span number.

What digit span is, and is not

Digit span is one of the oldest and simplest ways to measure short-term memory capacity: how many discrete items you can hold in mind at once and report back accurately. It has been used in psychology research for over a century because it is quick, requires no special equipment, and captures something real about memory capacity.

This version measures forward span only, repeating digits in the order you heard or saw them. It does not test backward span, saying the digits in reverse order, which is harder and draws more on active manipulation. It also does not test working memory more broadly, which includes holding information while doing something else with it, such as math or reasoning. A single digit span number is a narrow, useful slice, not a full working memory profile.

What can move your number

The classic estimate from early memory research put average adult digit span around seven items, plus or minus two, though more recent work suggests a tighter core capacity closer to three to five items when strategies like chunking and rehearsal are controlled for (Miller, 1956; Cowan, 2001). Most people land somewhere in the middle of that range on a first attempt.

Sleep, stress, distraction, and how quickly the digits are presented all affect your result. So does familiarity with the task: people who have taken digit span tests before, or who use memory strategies like grouping digits into chunks, tend to score higher than first-timers. None of that reflects a change in your underlying memory capacity, just how well conditions favored a good attempt on this try.

Working memory and everyday attention

Working memory difficulties show up in everyday life as losing the thread of a conversation, forgetting an instruction partway through following it, or needing to re-read a sentence. Digit span is one small, standardized piece of the larger picture researchers and clinicians use when they look at working memory, alongside tasks this short quiz cannot replicate.

If a low span here matches a pattern you already notice in daily life, forgetting multi-step instructions, losing track mid-task, that pattern is worth exploring further with something like the ADHD Test or a conversation with a clinician, rather than relying on this one task alone.

Methodology & sources

This is an original timed task built for Psychology.com. It uses the generic forward digit span paradigm that has been part of psychology research and clinical assessment for over a century, but it is not a reproduction of any proprietary instrument. The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale's digit span subtest, for example, is a copyrighted, clinician-administered instrument with its own standardized sequences and norms; we do not reproduce its items, and our task carries no relationship to its scoring.

The classic reference point for average adult digit span comes from George Miller's 1956 paper describing short-term memory capacity as seven items, plus or minus two (Miller, 1956). Later work using more controlled methods, removing the effect of rehearsal and chunking strategies, estimates a tighter core capacity closer to three to five items for most adults (Cowan, 2001). Because our task is self-administered, unsupervised, and untimed on the recall step, treat your span as a rough, self-comparison figure rather than a normed clinical score.

What is a good digit span score?

Classic research put average adult forward digit span around seven items, plus or minus two, with more recent estimates of core capacity closer to three to five items once strategies are accounted for. Most people land in the middle of that range.

Is this the same as the Wechsler digit span test?

No. The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale includes a proprietary, clinician-administered digit span subtest with its own sequences and norms. Our task uses the same general forward digit span idea, one that has been used in psychology research for over a century, but it is an original task, not a reproduction of that or any other copyrighted instrument.

Why does my span change if I take the test again?

Digit span is sensitive to attention, sleep, distraction, and practice. Taking the task again after learning the format, or when more tired or distracted, can shift your score up or down without your underlying memory capacity actually changing.

Is a low digit span a sign of a memory problem?

Not on its own. A single unsupervised attempt is affected by distraction, unfamiliarity with the task, and typing speed. If memory concerns are showing up in daily life, a persistent pattern rather than one quiz result, that is worth discussing with a doctor.

Does this test measure working memory or short-term memory?

Mostly short-term memory capacity, holding and immediately recalling information. Full working memory research also looks at manipulating information while holding it, such as reordering or doing math with it, which this forward-recall task does not test.

Can I improve my digit span with practice?

Yes, to a degree. Strategies like chunking digits into small groups, or simple rehearsal, reliably raise scores on digit span tasks. That improvement reflects a better strategy more than a change in raw memory capacity.
