What this reaction time test actually measures
This is a simple visual reaction time task for education and self-reflection. It measures how fast you respond to one expected signal, not intelligence, talent, or any clinical condition.
Five scored trials, one signal
The panel waits a random 1.5 to 4 seconds, then turns from red to green. Your job is to respond the instant it changes, five separate times. The random delay stops you from timing the change instead of reacting to it.
Why we report the median, not the average
One slow trial, a wandering thought, a missed glance, can drag a small average down badly. Reaction time researchers report the median of a short trial set for exactly this reason, so a single outlier does not define your result.
What this task cannot tell you
A single, untimed-device, unsupervised number says nothing about your intelligence, your driving safety, or any diagnosis. It is a rough, fun snapshot of one narrow skill on one afternoon, nothing more.

How the result is read
Your result is read from your median reaction time against 5 ranges. Lower is better. These ranges are educational reference points from the task design, not clinical norms.

How the score is calculated
Each of the five trials starts with a waiting screen and a random delay of 1.5 to 4 seconds before the panel turns green. Responding before the green signal counts as a false start: that trial is thrown out and does not count toward your score, so guessing the timing cannot help you. Once you respond to a valid green signal, the time between the signal and your key press or tap is recorded in milliseconds.
Your headline number is the median of the five scored trials, the middle value when they are sorted from fastest to slowest. We also show your best trial, your mean, and your false start count so you can see the full spread, not just one number. The median is used instead of the mean because a single distracted or unusually fast trial should not swing your result the way it would swing an average.
What reaction time is, and is not
Simple reaction time measures one narrow loop: notice a signal, decide to respond, move a finger. It is one of the oldest tasks in experimental psychology because it is easy to time precisely and hard to fake. It does not require language, reasoning, or memory, which is exactly why it cannot stand in for intelligence, working memory, or any broader cognitive skill.
Because the signal here is entirely expected, a light will turn green, and press something, this is simple reaction time, not choice reaction time, where you would need to pick the correct response among several options. Choice tasks are slower and involve more decision-making. A fast simple reaction time says only that your basic perception-to-movement loop is quick on this attempt, under these conditions, on this device.
What can move your number
Sleep debt, alcohol, and some medications reliably slow simple reaction time, while caffeine and a bit of warm-up practice tend to speed it up slightly. Age matters too: research using precisely timed lab equipment has found that reaction time slows gradually across adulthood, driven mainly by slower motor output rather than slower perception (Der and Deary, 2006).
Your device changes the number as much as your brain does. Touch screens, wireless input, and web browsers each add their own processing delay before your response is even recorded, and that delay is not the same across phones, laptops, and browsers (Reimers and Stewart, 2015). A desktop or laptop with a wired keyboard gives the most consistent timing; a phone screen will usually read tens of milliseconds slower for reasons that have nothing to do with your actual speed.
Reaction time and attention
Researchers do study reaction time and its trial-to-trial variability alongside attention and ADHD, but that work uses many more trials, controlled equipment, and trained scoring, none of which a five-trial browser quiz can offer. A slow or inconsistent result here is not evidence of ADHD or any attention condition.

The design, a random 1.5 to 4 second delay followed by a single go signal, scored across five trials with the median as the headline figure, follows the standard structure researchers use for simple reaction time measurement, though our version runs unsupervised in a web browser rather than in a controlled lab.
Typical adult simple reaction time to a visual signal, measured with precise laboratory timing equipment, clusters around 250 to 300 milliseconds, with meaningful variation by age, alertness, and testing conditions (Woods et al., 2015). Browser-based and touch-screen measurement adds its own delay on top of that biological floor, which is why this task is built for self-comparison over time and general interest rather than as a precise or clinical measurement.

What is a good reaction time?
In lab studies with precise equipment, typical adult simple reaction time to a visual signal falls around 250 to 300 milliseconds. In a browser, on a phone, or when tired, a somewhat higher number is common and does not mean anything is wrong.
Why does my phone give a slower result than a keyboard?
Touch screens and mobile browsers add their own processing delay before your tap is even recorded. That delay is separate from your actual response speed, so a desktop or laptop with a keyboard will usually read faster and more consistently.
Can I improve my reaction time with practice?
Yes, to a point. Most people get a little faster after a few attempts as they get used to the task and their device. Sleep, alertness, and avoiding alcohol before testing make a bigger difference than practice alone.
Does a fast reaction time mean I am smart?
No. Simple reaction time measures one narrow perception-to-movement loop, not reasoning, memory, or general intelligence. Plenty of very fast responders would score anywhere on an intelligence test, and vice versa.
Is this test used to diagnose ADHD or any condition?
No. This is an original, unvalidated task for education and entertainment. Clinicians who study reaction time and attention use many more trials, controlled equipment, and standardized scoring that a short browser quiz cannot replicate.
What counts as a false start?
Responding before the panel turns green counts as a false start. That trial is discarded and does not count toward your median, best, or mean, so there is no advantage to guessing early.
