What this processing speed test actually measures
This is a 60-second symbol-matching task for education and self-reflection. It measures how quickly you can process and act on simple visual information under time pressure, not intelligence or any clinical condition.
A key of nine symbols and digits
A key at the top pairs nine abstract symbols with the digits 1 through 9. Symbols appear one at a time below the key, and you press or tap the digit that matches, as fast and as accurately as you can.
One minute, working the whole time
The task runs for a fixed 60 seconds. There is no set number of symbols; how many you see depends entirely on how quickly you work through them, which is the point of a processing speed task.
Speed under pressure, not knowledge or reasoning
Every symbol-digit pair is shown in the key the whole time, so nothing here is memorized or figured out. The task isolates how fast you can look, decide, and respond, repeatedly, for a full minute.

Your result is read from your correct matches against 4 ranges. Higher is better. These ranges are educational reference points from the task design, not clinical norms.

How the score is calculated
A key at the top of the screen shows nine abstract symbols, each paired with a digit from 1 to 9. Below the key, symbols appear one at a time; for each one, you press the matching number key or tap the matching digit on screen as quickly as you can. The key stays visible the entire time, so the task never asks you to memorize the pairings, only to look them up and respond quickly, over and over.
The task runs for a fixed 60 seconds. Your headline score is the number of correct matches you made in that minute. We also show how many symbols you attempted in total and your accuracy, the share of attempts you got right, so a fast but careless run and a slower but precise one look different in the results, not just as a single blended number.
What processing speed is, and is not
Processing speed refers to how quickly someone can take in simple information, decide what to do with it, and respond, before any complex reasoning enters the picture. It is measured with tasks like this one precisely because they minimize the role of prior knowledge or problem-solving: everything you need is on the screen the whole time, so speed of looking and responding is what separates one score from another.
Clinical neuropsychology uses tasks built on this same symbol-substitution idea, most notably the Symbol Digit Modalities Test and the coding subtests within the Wechsler intelligence scales, both of which are clinician-administered, copyrighted instruments with their own standardized symbols, timing, and population norms (Smith, 1982). The general paradigm, matching symbols to digits against a key under time pressure, is not proprietary and has been used in psychology research for decades; our specific symbols and scoring are original to this task and are not a reproduction of either clinical instrument.
Processing speed, ADHD, and dyslexia
Slower processing speed, measured with controlled clinical tasks over many trials, shows up as a shared feature in research on both ADHD and reading disabilities like dyslexia, even though the two conditions are otherwise quite different (Shanahan et al., 2006). Processing speed also gradually declines across adulthood on average, one of the most consistently replicated findings in cognitive aging research (Salthouse, 1996).
None of that research was conducted with a 60-second, unsupervised browser task like this one. A single score here cannot suggest, rule in, or rule out ADHD, dyslexia, or any other condition. If slow processing is a pattern you already notice, in reading, in following fast-paced conversations, in finishing timed tasks, that pattern is worth exploring with something like the ADHD Test or the Dyslexia Test, or with a clinician who can use properly normed instruments.
Methodology & sources
This is an original timed task built for Psychology.com, using the generic symbol-substitution paradigm that has been part of cognitive testing for decades. It is not a reproduction of any proprietary instrument: the specific symbols shown, their pairing with digits, the 60-second window, and the scoring are all designed for this task alone. The Symbol Digit Modalities Test (Smith, 1982) and the coding subtests of the Wechsler intelligence scales use the same general idea, matching symbols to a key under time pressure, but both are copyrighted, clinician-administered instruments with their own standardized materials and population norms, which we do not reproduce.
Because this task has no standardization sample, its bands are our own educational ranges built from the task's design and general expectations for a 60-second matching task, not clinical cutoffs or percentiles from a tested population. Processing speed measured this informally is also affected by typing or tapping familiarity, screen size, and general alertness, on top of whatever it captures about underlying speed of processing (Salthouse, 1996).

What is a good processing speed score?
On this task, 45 to 64 correct matches in 60 seconds is our typical range, based on the task's design rather than a tested population sample. There is no official cutoff, since this is an original, unnormed task.
Is this the same as the Symbol Digit Modalities Test used by clinicians?
No. The Symbol Digit Modalities Test and the Wechsler coding subtests are copyrighted, clinician-administered instruments with their own standardized symbols and population norms. Our task uses the same general symbol-matching idea but with original symbols and scoring, not a reproduction of either instrument.
Does slow processing speed mean I have ADHD or dyslexia?
No, not from this task alone. Research links slower processing speed, measured with proper clinical tools, to both conditions on average, but a single 60-second browser task cannot diagnose or rule out anything. A consistent real-world pattern is worth discussing with a clinician.
Why does accuracy matter alongside my correct count?
Working very fast but carelessly can produce a similar correct count to working steadily and accurately, but they reflect different things. We show attempted, correct, and accuracy together so you can see whether speed came at the cost of precision.
Can I improve my processing speed with practice?
Familiarity with this specific task, knowing where the keys are, how the symbols look, tends to raise scores on a second attempt. That reflects task practice more than a change in your underlying processing speed.
Why does processing speed slow with age?
Processing speed is one of the most consistently observed cognitive changes across adulthood, declining gradually on average as people get older, based on decades of cognitive aging research (Salthouse, 1996). It is a normal pattern, not a sign of a problem on its own.
