Continuing education for psychologists

Plan psychology CE around professional development and the requirements attached to your license. Look for appropriate instructional depth, a clear evidence base, and an approval statement that applies to the actual activity. A broad mental-health audience is not proof that a course qualifies for psychologist credit.

The American Psychological Association, APA, approves CE sponsors through its sponsor approval program. That is different from accrediting a graduate program or licensing an individual psychologist. For a particular activity, check the sponsor’s statement, the number of credits offered, and the delivery format. APA approves sponsors, not individual courses. APA sponsor approval FAQ.

State acceptance remains a separate question. New York maintains Department-approved providers for psychology. California uses a continuing professional development framework in which sponsored CE is one category among several. Do not assume an APA statement resolves every jurisdiction’s subject requirements, format rules, or provider requirements. NYSED psychology providers, California CPD guidance.

An ASWB or NBCC approval alone should not be presented as proof of psychologist eligibility. Similarly, membership in a professional association is not the same as approval to offer credits. Ask for the exact route before enrolling for renewal purposes.

Match the catalog to your learning needs

Our planned Suicide Assessment and Safety Planning course, proposed six hours, connects assessment, formulation, safety planning, means safety, and follow-up. The public safety-planning guide introduces the topic and evidence limitations. Neither the guide nor a proposed course designation establishes a state mandate’s acceptance.

AI in Clinical Practice, proposed three hours, examines privacy, consent, legal scope, vendor review, and documentation. The learning asks clinicians to distinguish a technically eligible service from a lawful clinical task and to review generated text against the encounter. Its final credit classification remains subject to approval.

Trauma-Informed Assessment and Stabilization addresses screening interpretation, consent-based support, treatment sequencing, and referral boundaries. It is not training or certification in a named trauma therapy or a substitute for competence in a structured diagnostic interview.

The catalog also includes planned documentation and measurement-based care, cultural responsiveness, telehealth, CBT, and supervision courses. Choose activities with the appropriate depth for your role. Supervisor development, for example, should be distinguished from a pathway for obtaining initial supervisor qualifications.

California CPD needs a broader plan

California’s Board of Psychology requires 36 hours within its CPD renewal framework and limits sponsored CE to 27 hours. A catalog of sponsored courses therefore cannot, by itself, fill the entire standard requirement. Plan appropriate activities in the other permitted categories and check the board’s subject requirements and documentation rules. California Board of Psychology CPD FAQ.

That distinction is why a psychologist’s renewal plan should not be copied from a California BBS licensee’s plan. Similar topic names can sit within different regulatory structures. If you hold multiple credentials, review each separately.

Record your applicable dates and remaining obligations before enrolling. Confirm the proposed course closes the actual gap, including category and format, rather than only adding to a total.

Psychologists may find the material useful, but we do not represent it as APA-approved or accepted psychologist CE. Its proposed audience and any eventual psychologist credit route require the final eligibility statement.
