Michigan psychologist CE requirements
Michigan psychologists and limited licensed psychologists need 30 approved CE hours in the two years before renewal. Include at least 3 hours in ethics and 2 in pain and symptom management. A two-year license cycle also requires 2 hours of implicit bias training.
All 30 hours may be earned online under the current rule. The psychology rules effective May 8, 2025 expressly allow qualifying implicit bias training to count toward the 30-hour total. One-time human trafficking training is a separate licensure requirement.

Format and self-study limits
Where our courses fit. Every Psychology.com course is self-paced and asynchronous: you read and listen on your own schedule and finish with an online exam. Where your board separates home study, self-study, distance or non-interactive CE from live or synchronous CE, our courses fall in the first group. They never count as live, interactive or in-person training.
There is no limit on online CE hours. Approved self-study programs may supply all 30 hours. You may earn no more than 12 CE hours in a 24-hour period, and may not count substantially equivalent activities twice during the same cycle.
Which providers count
R 338.2583 explicitly accepts psychology-related programs approved or offered by APA and NBCC, among its listed organizations. Other routes include NASW, another state or provincial psychology board, and qualifying accredited institutions. ASWB is not separately listed as an automatic approval route. Keep the activity description and completion certificate.
Implicit bias training must include strategies to reduce health care disparities and pre- and post-training implicit bias assessments. Eligible sponsors include recognized health organizations, state or federal agencies, qualifying board-approved educational programs, accredited colleges or universities, and organizations specializing in diversity, equity and inclusion.
Reporting and audits
Renewal certifies compliance. Retain CE documentation for four years after applying for renewal. CE Broker is optional for routine tracking; upload evidence there if LARA selects you for an audit.
Keep implicit bias documentation for 6 years after applying for licensure or renewal under R 338.7004, even when the general CE retention period is shorter.
First renewal
The current R 338.2581 requires 30 hours for an applicant who has been licensed in the preceding two-year period and does not state a general first-renewal exemption. Plan for that requirement. Initial applicants separately need 2 hours of implicit bias within five years before issuance and one-time human trafficking training. Temporary and educational limited licenses have separate rules.

Yes, through activities qualifying under R 338.2583. The rule also limits credit to 12 hours in any 24-hour period.
Does implicit bias count toward the 30 hours?
Yes. The current psychology rule allows training under R 338.7004 completed in the preceding two years to count toward CE.
Is human trafficking training recurring for psychologists?
No. It is a one-time training requirement, unlike recurring implicit bias training.
Do I send certificates when I renew?
Renewal is an attestation. Keep general CE certificates for four years after applying and implicit bias records for six years. Supply evidence if audited.
