About this tool

Self-esteem is your overall sense of your own worth and value. Low self-esteem often runs on two engines: a thin or discounted view of your strengths, and a loud, automatic inner critic that interprets events in the harshest possible light. Cognitive behavioral therapy treats both, and this worksheet follows that structure.

Psychologist Melanie Fennell, whose CBT model of low self-esteem is widely used, describes how negative core beliefs about the self (such as I am not good enough) bias attention and interpretation, so neutral or positive events get explained away while criticism sticks. Building an honest strengths inventory and learning to catch and challenge self-critical thoughts gradually loosens that bias.

The third piece is self-talk. The way you speak to yourself, especially when things go wrong, shapes how you feel and what you do next. Replacing a harsh inner voice with a fairer, kinder one is a learnable skill, closely related to self-compassion, and it tends to make people more resilient rather than complacent.

Self-esteem rarely transforms overnight. Treat this as a practice. Returning to these steps when the inner critic flares is what builds lasting change.
