Answers are scored 0–72 in total. Your result falls into one of 3 bands:

How the Visual Processing Test Is Scored
Each of the eighteen statements is rated from 0 (never) to 4 (very often), for a total score from 0 to 72. They are grouped into three perceptual skill areas of six items each: discrimination and figure-ground, visual memory and sequencing, and spatial and motor integration, each worth up to 24 points. Your total and your area-by-area breakdown are shown separately, since visual processing difficulties often concentrate in one skill area while leaving others largely unaffected.
The bands on this page, low, moderate, and high, are our own educational ranges describing the strength of your self-reported experience. They are not clinical cutoffs from a normed diagnostic battery. Formal assessment of visual processing uses standardized, clinician-administered tests scored against an age-matched population, which a self-report questionnaire cannot replicate.
This Is Not an Eyesight Test
Visual processing is entirely separate from visual acuity, how sharply you see. Someone can have 20/20 vision and still struggle to tell similar shapes apart, remember a visual sequence, or judge how far away something is, because those are perceptual and cognitive skills the brain performs after the eye has already captured a clear image. The reverse is also true: uncorrected vision problems, like an outdated prescription or an undiagnosed binocular vision issue, can look a lot like a processing difference from the outside.
Because of that overlap, an eye exam confirming normal or corrected vision should always come before exploring visual processing as an explanation. If your eyesight checks out clear and the everyday patterns in this test still resonate, then perception, not acuity, is the more likely explanation worth pursuing further.
Who Actually Assesses Visual Processing
Formal evaluation of visual processing skills is typically done by a developmental optometrist, an occupational therapist, or a neuropsychologist, depending on the concern and your age. Clinicians commonly use standardized instruments like the Test of Visual Perceptual Skills, 4th edition (TVPS-4) and the Beery-Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration (Beery VMI), both proprietary, clinician-administered assessments we name here for reference only and do not reproduce.
These evaluations typically involve structured tasks, matching shapes, copying figures, recalling sequences, administered and scored under standardized conditions, which is fundamentally different from a self-report questionnaire like this one. If your results here stand out, asking your eye doctor for a referral to a developmental optometrist or occupational therapist is the concrete next step.
Visual Processing, Dyslexia, and Dyspraxia
Visual processing differences overlap with both dyslexia and dyspraxia, though the three describe different things. Dyslexia centers on language processing, decoding written words specifically, and research has found that while perceptual factors play some role, they explain far less of reading difficulty than language-based skills do. Dyspraxia centers on motor planning and coordination broadly, and shares ground with the spatial-motor integration piece of visual processing specifically, since both involve translating what you perceive into coordinated action.

This is an original, house-made screener written for education and self-reflection. The eighteen items sample everyday experiences across three perceptual skill areas described in the vision-therapy and occupational-therapy literature: visual discrimination and figure-ground (telling similar things apart, finding an item in clutter), visual memory and sequencing (recalling what you saw and in what order), and spatial relations, directionality, and visual-motor integration (judging space, coordinating hand and eye).
