Answers are scored 0–64 in total. Your result falls into one of 3 bands:

How the Sensory Processing Screener Is Scored

This Sensory Processing Test describes your reported reactions to everyday sensory input. Each of the sixteen statements is rated from 0 (not at all true) to 4 (very true), so your total score ranges from 0 to 64. The items are grouped into five channels: touch, sound, sight, movement and body awareness, and a mixed channel covering taste, smell, and sensory seeking. Your total and your channel scores are shown separately, because a moderate total can still hide one channel that scores very high.

The scoring bands used here, low, moderate, and high sensory sensitivity, describe the strength of your reported responses. They are descriptive ranges for an educational screener, not clinical cutoffs from a validated diagnostic instrument. A standardized measure like the Adult Sensory Profile (Brown et al., 2001) uses its own normed cutoffs and is administered or interpreted by a trained clinician.

The channel breakdown groups answers by the sense involved. It does not separately measure sensory seeking, avoiding, sensitivity, and low registration as the Adult Sensory Profile does. A high channel score can reflect different experiences, so read it alongside the statements you endorsed. The research supporting the Adult Sensory Profile does not establish the accuracy of this original questionnaire.

Sensory Processing Disorder: Is It a Diagnosis?

Sensory Processing Disorder is not currently a standalone diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR, though sensory reactivity is recognized as a diagnostic feature within autism spectrum disorder. Many adults with strong sensory differences do not have autism or ADHD at all, and sensory sensitivity exists on a spectrum across the general population.

That does not make the experience less real. Where sensory differences significantly disrupt work, sleep, eating, or relationships, an occupational therapist trained in sensory integration can assess your specific pattern using standardized tools and build a plan around it, whether or not another diagnosis is present.

Sensory Processing vs Autism vs ADHD

Sensory differences overlap heavily with autism and ADHD, but the three are not the same thing. Autism involves social communication differences and restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior, with sensory reactivity as one recognized feature. ADHD centers on attention, impulsivity, and activity level. Sensory processing differences describe how intensely the nervous system registers input, and can occur with either condition or entirely on their own.

What to Do After the Sensory Processing Test

If your result feels moderate, start with your environment. Noise-reducing earphones, softer fabrics, dimmer lighting, and a quiet retreat space are inexpensive changes that can meaningfully lower everyday overwhelm. If your result is high, or sensory differences are significantly disrupting your daily life, an occupational therapist trained in sensory integration can assess your pattern with standardized tools and build a personalized plan, sometimes called a sensory diet. Signs of Sensory Processing Differences in Adults

Sensory differences tend to show up in ordinary moments rather than dramatic ones. You might notice yourself pulling off a clothing tag the moment you feel it, turning down the radio in a car full of other noise, or needing sunglasses indoors on an overcast day. Some adults find a busy grocery store or an open-plan office draining within minutes, while others crave more input: fidgeting, chewing gum, keeping music on, or seeking out tight hugs and weighted blankets to feel settled.

These patterns can be easy to miss because they look like preferences rather than a nervous system trait. A useful test is whether the reaction is out of proportion to the trigger, or whether avoiding or seeking that input has become a daily habit that shapes where you sit, what you wear, or how you plan your day. It is informed by Winnie Dunn's model of sensory processing, which describes how people vary along dimensions of sensory sensitivity and behavioral response, from over-responsive (easily overwhelmed) to under-responsive and sensation-seeking. The sixteen items sample everyday reactions across touch, sound, sight, movement and body awareness, and taste and smell. The scores describe the strength of your sensory responses; they are not clinical cutoffs.

Sensory processing differences are common and exist across the population, including among autistic and ADHD people, though they can also occur on their own. What is sensory processing?

Sensory processing is how your nervous system takes in and responds to input from your senses. People vary a lot: some are easily overwhelmed by sound, light, or texture, while others register less and seek more input. Both are normal differences.

Is this a diagnostic test?

No. This is an educational screener that describes your sensory pattern. A formal sensory processing assessment is carried out by an occupational therapist using standardized tools. This tool can only flag whether that support might be helpful. It cannot establish a sensory processing disorder, autism, or ADHD, and its score bands have no diagnostic meaning.

Is sensory processing difference a disorder?

Sensory differences are common and are not in themselves a disorder. Where they significantly disrupt daily life, an occupational therapist can assess and support. Many people simply benefit from understanding and accommodating how their nervous system works. Consider the effect on eating, sleep, work, and relationships when deciding whether to seek support.

Is this linked to autism or ADHD?

Sensory differences are very common among autistic and ADHD people, but they also occur on their own. If your result stands out, you might also explore the autism or neurodivergence screeners, and consider an occupational therapist. An elevated sensory score by itself cannot distinguish autism, ADHD, or sensory differences occurring without either condition.
