In short
A therapist advertising budget can buy a directory profile, a membership-based locator, auction ads, a visibility upgrade or someone else's management work. These are different purchases. General directory prices in this comparison begin around $30 monthly, while some specialty memberships work out lower but require annual dues and qualifying credentials. Google, Apple and Bing offer free business-listing surfaces subject to eligibility. Search and social ads have no universal therapist price per inquiry. Compare the complete recurring expense, setup costs and actual appropriate inquiries; the table's inquiry figures are clearly labeled arithmetic assumptions, not promised performance.
What does therapist advertising actually cost per month?
Start by identifying the unit you are buying. A directory subscription generally pays for a profile and specified discovery features. Association dues purchase membership with a possible public locator benefit. An advertising auction spends a budget on delivery or interactions. A writing or management service purchases labor and may exclude both the listing fee and the advertising budget.
The general therapist directory comparison helps choose among broad directories. This guide compares expenses across surfaces, so it does not rank those directories again. The practice guides provide the surrounding practice decisions.
Use the recurring price after a promotion when deciding whether you can maintain a placement. Record setup fees and annual prepayments separately. A low monthly equivalent does not remove an annual cash requirement, and a free trial does not establish what the service will produce once billing begins.
How should you read the master price table?
All published amounts below were checked September 26, 2026 on the named operator's own page or, where noted, its official indexed text after a blocked direct request. Quotes are short published price excerpts. USD is used unless a different currency is named. A price marked unpublished is not filled with an estimate.
For fixed-fee profiles, the illustration assumes two distinct appropriate inquiries per paid month, or 24 per paid year, with zero additional management, labor and tax expense. It excludes introductory credits. Setup fees are included where stated and annualized over twelve months solely for comparison. These assumptions apply to every fixed-fee row; actual inquiries may be zero. At zero inquiries, cost per inquiry cannot be calculated as a finite result.
For auctions and unpriced services, each row gives its own hypothetical spend or formula. An appropriate inquiry means someone within your authorized service area, scope, appointment format and payment arrangements. No row predicts conversion, attendance or retention. The table compares arithmetic under stated assumptions, not directory effectiveness.

Which general directory expenses are easy to overlook?
Psychology Today's join page, join.psychologytoday.com/us/signup, publishes the regular monthly subscription. GoodTherapy's page at www.goodtherapy.org/join-therapist-directory-membership separates Basic, Premium and Pro. The higher tiers include additional benefits, so decide whether you need those benefits before treating the larger payment as a better advertising placement. Both pages were accessed September 26, 2026.
Mental Health Match's clinician page at mentalhealthmatch.com/for-therapists states "$39 Monthly Or $375 Annually" after a 60-day trial. Zencare's therapist page at therapist.zencare.co/ publishes its starting fee, setup charge and NY/CA rate. An annual price or initial creative service can change the comparison materially even when two monthly headlines appear close.
TherapyDen's sign-in page still advertises "CREATE A FREE PROFILE," but its FAQ at www.therapyden.com/faq publishes a premium price and restricts internal search and multistate features to premium. Both were checked September 26, 2026. Do not equate a shareable free profile with a free placement in every internal search result. The earlier free therapist directory guide provides broader free options; this current FAQ qualification matters when budgeting TherapyDen visibility.
Publisher disclosure: we operate the general directory identified as the publisher in the table. It is an additional placement to evaluate alongside the others; we make no claim that it produces more referrals.
When are specialty directories and association locators a better purchase?
A specialty placement may communicate a qualification or reach people who already recognize a method or community. Check the gate before comparing prices. EMDRIA Full membership depends on completed recognized basic training and independent licensure or equivalent; it is not identical to EMDR certification. IOCDF's professional profile is a membership benefit, while its directory terms distinguish listing from a competence endorsement.
The relevant sources, checked September 26, 2026, are www.emdria.org/about-emdria/emdria-membership/ and iocdf.org/professionals/membership/. EMDRIA's direct page was blocked, with its official indexed text available. ADAA's official membership text at members.adaa.org/page/join likewise supplies its annual professional dues and restricts public therapist listings to eligible licensed US members.
For couples clinicians, gottmanreferralnetwork.com/join publishes different profile prices for Level 2/3 and certified therapists. Latinx Therapy's latinxtherapy.com/join/ separates lower-priced profiles from tiers with website and additional-state features. A lower figure is useful only if the plan includes what your practice needs and you meet the current eligibility rules.
If you would pay association dues for professional reasons anyway, the incremental listing expense may be zero. If you join only for advertising, count the full required dues. Both views can be useful, but neither should hide the actual cash payment.
What free map surfaces should you establish first?
Google Business Profile's own product page describes it as "free," checked September 26, 2026, at business.google.com/us/business-profile/. Apple's March 24, 2026 announcement describes Apple Business as a "free service," including the business information tools that succeeded Business Connect. Bing's October 3, 2025 announcement calls Bing Places a "free online platform." Their public management routes are business.apple.com and www.bing.com/forbusiness/.
These free surfaces are useful contrasts to a recurring advertising subscription. A vendor may charge to create or maintain the information, but that charge pays for service, not a mandatory fee imposed by the map operator. Ask which one you are being quoted.
Eligibility still matters. Google's eligibility policy excludes online-only businesses. A video-only clinician should not purchase a virtual office or conceal the lack of in-person service to obtain a map pin. Hybrid and service-area businesses need to qualify on their actual operations.
Free placement is not costless work. Keep hours, contact information, address and service description accurate. Measure the business results without pretending that a zero platform fee means no staff time was involved.
What does Google Search advertising cost a therapist?
Google Search ads do not have a universal published therapist subscription or fixed cost per click. The table's $300 spend and three inquiries are an example you choose for arithmetic, not a market rate. At those assumptions, media alone costs $100 per appropriate inquiry. A management charge, landing-page expense or poor fit would change the result.
Google's average daily budget guidance, accessed September 26, 2026, explains that delivery can vary by day and describes the usual monthly limit in relation to 30.4 times the average daily budget. Do not assume that entering a daily amount is the same as setting a simple thirty-day invoice.
Buy search ads only when a specific service, authorized geography, useful landing page and response process are ready. Record whether searches and inquiries match that service. More clicks do not resolve an unavailable appointment schedule or an insurance mismatch.
The advertising guide for therapists covers campaign decisions in more detail. For this price comparison, the key is to separate the money paid to the ad platform from the fee paid to anyone running it.
Can mental health clinicians buy Local Services Ads?
Do not assume eligibility from the word therapist. Google's Local Services Ads category guidance, accessed September 26, 2026, lists physical therapist and occupational therapist among its categories. The checked list does not establish a general psychotherapy or mental health counselor category. Those different professional services are not interchangeable.
Confirm your exact business type and location through Google's eligibility process before allocating money. Do not select a different profession to make an application pass. For an eligible business, the product charges for leads under its applicable terms, but no universal therapist lead price is published on the checked page.
The table's conditional example is deliberately labeled hypothetical and is not a recommendation that a licensed mental health clinician can currently purchase it. An advertising company should explain eligibility and screening before asking for an LSA management payment. If the actual practice is ineligible, the placement has no meaningful cost-per-inquiry forecast for that practice.
What should you budget for Meta and other auction placements?
Meta advertising is another budgeted advertising purchase, not a directory membership. This review's attempts to open Meta's pricing and business-help pages led to login or access restrictions on September 26, 2026. A current universal therapist price per click or inquiry was not verified. The table uses only an explicitly hypothetical $200 spend and five appropriate inquiries.
Before launching, confirm current advertising and targeting rules in the platform, the proposed audience, the creative and how contacts are handled. Do not assume that sensitive health or identity-based targeting is available because it would suit your specialty. Avoid putting clinical information into advertising audiences or conversion events.
Apple's own ads page at ads.apple.com/maps also describes a paid Maps surface, separate from free business information. No universal placement or inquiry price is published on the checked page. A paid map advertisement should be evaluated as its own product, including availability and billing, rather than being silently included in the cost of a free business listing.
For any auction, choose a maximum test spend your practice can afford without needing a promised result. A budget buys an opportunity to learn about that service and audience; it does not buy a guaranteed new client.
Do sponsored placements inside a directory earn their extra fee?
OutCare's membership page at www.outcarehealth.org/membership/, accessed September 26, 2026, provides a clear example. Its free OutList profile can be upgraded to Elevated at "$99/yr" or Empowered at "$199/yr." The operator describes ordering benefits above lower tiers. That is a published paid-visibility feature, not evidence of a guaranteed increase in appropriate inquiries.
Compare the extra payment with extra results over the free or existing profile. If the free listing already brought the same two inquiries, assigning both to the upgrade would overstate its value. The table's annualized examples assume two incremental appropriate inquiries each month specifically to make this distinction explicit.
A featured badge can reflect payment rather than an independent clinical assessment. Do not describe sponsored prominence as proof of greater competence or vetting. Ask which searches the upgrade affects, whether placement is shared with other advertisers and what reporting is available. Keep any vendor performance claims separate from your own measured results.
What are profile writing and managed listings actually selling?
Profile writing buys a deliverable: an interview or questionnaire, original copy, revisions and perhaps entry into the directory editor. It does not inherently purchase the directory subscription, improve search rank or transfer your responsibility for accurate clinical claims. There is no universal published fee for this service category, so obtain a scoped quote instead of using an invented market average.
Managed listings pay someone to maintain information across specified surfaces. Ask which sites are included, whether paid subscriptions are additional, who controls the accounts and how corrections are handled after the engagement ends. A report showing many submitted listings is not the same as verified, accurate public profiles.
Brighter Vision's pricing page, pricing.brightervision.com/, accessed September 26, 2026, publishes a Flourish package at "$349/month" in its monthly billing presentation, including website services, Google Business Profile support and a GoodTherapy listing. It is a bundle, not a $349 directory listing fee. Other billing presentations appear on the page, so confirm the checkout term rather than assuming every displayed amount applies to the same contract.
The therapist marketing agency guide helps assess service scope. Keep writing, account management, media spend and directory dues as separate budget lines even when one vendor invoices them together.
How do you compare costs without inventing a return on investment?
Use actual expense divided by distinct appropriate inquiries for the same time period. Then calculate attended first appointments separately. A person who visits three profiles and sends two messages is still one person, and a contact outside your licensed area is not a usable inquiry for the advertised service.
Include setup or writing costs over a clearly stated review period. For example, amortizing a hypothetical $300 writing project over six months adds $50 per month before the directory fee. That is an accounting assumption, not a claim about typical copywriting prices. If the benefit lasts longer or the profile produces no inquiries, the interpretation changes.
Do not count the entire session fee as profit or assume a long treatment duration to make an acquisition cost appear affordable. Keep clinical decisions independent of the advertising calculation. Small practices can make sensible renewal decisions with modest records, provided they acknowledge uncertainty and count consistently.
Avoid collecting clinical narratives in a marketing spreadsheet. Source, date, business fit and appointment status are usually enough for the comparison. Review the same measures before and after a change rather than moving the goalposts when a favored placement performs poorly.
Consider two hypothetical outcomes for a $40 monthly placement. Four inquiries give a raw cost of $10 each, but if only one fits your state, fee and service, the appropriate-inquiry cost is $40. A different placement costing $30 with two appropriate inquiries costs $15 each. The first has more activity but a less useful result under those assumptions. Neither example establishes a market benchmark.
Keep a copy of the checkout terms with the review record. Note the renewal date, whether cancellation stops the next charge or ends access immediately, whether annual payments are refundable, and what happens to a profile or its content after cancellation. If management is bundled, establish whether you retain the account and copy. These details make a short test genuinely reviewable and prevent a seemingly modest monthly purchase from becoming an expense you cannot readily adjust.
What should you choose under $50, from $50 to $150, or above $150?
Under $50 a month, complete eligible free surfaces and choose one paid placement that fits the practice. A relevant annual association membership can fit the monthly equivalent while still requiring upfront cash. Do not divide a tiny budget among several subscriptions that leave no time to maintain profiles or answer inquiries.
From $50 to $150, keep one producing placement and test a genuinely different route, such as a specialty locator or a second directory with useful state coverage. Set a review date and a combined spending ceiling. Two subscriptions reaching the same audience may add less than one accurate profile and a dependable intake process.
Over $150, decide which problem the additional money should solve. It might fund a controlled search-ad test, a needed profile rewrite or management work that saves staff time. Require separate figures for media, service fees and setup. More budget does not make an ineligible map listing or an unsupported ranking promise a better purchase.
At every level, renew around evidence and available appointments. Keep professional memberships for their professional value when that is the reason to belong. Keep advertising when its audience, appropriate inquiries and total cost support the practice you actually intend to run.

- Treat all inquiry-cost examples as assumptions, not referral forecasts.
- Free map information and paid listing management are different expenses.
- Confirm LSA eligibility before allocating any budget.
- Use a spending ceiling and review date for every additional paid placement.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest paid therapist advertising placement?
There is no useful single answer without eligibility and features. A specialty membership can have a low monthly equivalent but require annual dues and a qualifying credential. A cheap profile may omit internal search or a website link. Compare the actual configuration your practice can use.
Is a directory subscription the same as paying for leads?
No. A fixed subscription generally pays for a profile and stated benefits regardless of how many contacts arrive. A lead-based product charges under its own lead definitions and terms. Neither payment model guarantees that a contact will be appropriate, attend or continue treatment.
Should I pay someone to create a free map listing?
You can choose to pay for useful setup or maintenance work, but distinguish that labor charge from the platform’s own fee. Google, Apple and Bing publish free business-information options subject to eligibility. A vendor should explain its deliverables and leave you with appropriate account control.
Are the table’s inquiry costs expected results?
No. They are arithmetic examples with explicit spending and inquiry assumptions, excluding labor, tax and management unless stated. Actual inquiries can be zero. Use your own consistent definition of appropriate inquiries and actual invoices before deciding whether a placement earns its cost.
How much should an advertising agency charge a therapist?
No universal published amount applies to the category. Request a written scope separating setup, management, creative work, media and directory subscriptions. Compare deliverables, ownership and cancellation terms. A lower headline fee can still produce a higher total bill when essential services are excluded.
