In short
TherapyDen offers a free therapist profile (its FAQ says only premium profiles, at $30 a month, appear in its search results), and Open Path has no therapist listing fee for its reduced-fee care network. Eligible practices can also use free business listings and some locators included in professional memberships. Free signup is not always free client acquisition: Zocdoc charges for certain bookings, Gottman’s network is paid, and Psychology Today’s referral months are conditional. Start with accurate listings you can maintain, check eligibility and review the terms before adding an account. These findings were checked September 26, 2026.
Which therapist directories are actually free?
A free therapist directory should let you publish an eligible profile without a recurring listing bill. TherapyDen and Open Path meet that description in their public join material. General business listings can also be free. Association benefits, temporary trials and platforms that charge when someone books belong in separate budget categories, even when their signup button says free.
This guide covers the main US listing routes and the important eligibility limits. No nationwide list can establish every state chapter's current policy or every clinician's eligibility. The checks below are dated September 26, 2026. A free place on the internet is useful only if the right person can find accurate information and contact you.
TherapyDen: an ongoing free profile
TherapyDen's account page, accessed September 26, 2026, says “CREATE A FREE PROFILE.” TherapyDen’s own FAQ, checked September 26, 2026, adds the part that matters for referrals: free profiles are not "included in TherapyDen search results" and can list only one online-counseling state; the premium profile that is included in search and can list multiple states costs "$30" a month. Its directory emphasizes inclusive, values-driven care. This makes it a sensible starting point for a clinician whose actual practice matches the identities, services and preferences described in the profile. Do not fill every specialty box just because the listing costs nothing.
Keep fees, insurance participation, states of licensure and availability current. Write the first paragraph around a specific client concern and what an initial conversation with you involves. A free listing with a dead contact route cannot produce a useful inquiry. We did not verify a public traffic figure with a local reporting period or an independently audited license-check process; free is a price finding, not a quality certification.
Open Path: no listing fee, with a reduced-fee commitment
Open Path's therapist join page, accessed September 26, 2026, describes “Free client referrals.” Its model connects eligible clients with affordable therapy, and its therapist application is reviewed. You should consider it if reduced-fee appointments belong in your practice plan. It is not a substitute for a directory campaign aimed exclusively at your full private-pay rate.
Decide how many reduced-fee appointments you can sustain before applying. Include consultation time, documentation and gaps in attendance when you set that capacity. Ask about the current fee agreement and what happens when a client's circumstances change. There is no therapist listing charge in the checked offer, but the reduced session revenue is still an economic commitment. That can be a deliberate and worthwhile one.
Does Inclusive Therapists have a free tier?
We could not verify an unrestricted free directory listing on the accessible public pages. The site's indexed login information describes a free Scholar Membership without a directory profile. Its indexed FAQ also mentions sponsored or reduced-fee membership questions. Those findings do not establish that any licensed clinician can publish a free listing today.
The direct join and FAQ pages blocked retrieval during our September 26, 2026 check. Ask for written eligibility, duration, renewal cost and whether a public profile is included before treating an offer as a free advertising channel. The source addresses are https://www.inclusivetherapists.com/login and https://www.inclusivetherapists.com/faq. A community account and a searchable therapist listing are different products.
Association locators: included may still mean dues
The APA Psychologist Locator is described in APA's indexed member-benefit page as “Free marketing of your practice.” Eligibility includes APA membership and a valid clinical license. That can mean no additional listing fee if you already qualify; it does not make association dues disappear. Source checked September 26, 2026: https://www.apa.org/members/your-membership/benefits/locator. Direct retrieval was restricted, so confirm current eligibility with member services.
AAMFT provides member instructions for editing a Therapist Locator listing through the member account. Check your membership category and public-profile eligibility before counting it as an included benefit. ACA's accessible community guide describes a member directory, which is not by itself evidence of a public consumer referral locator. We did not verify a universal free ACA therapist advertising listing. Its guide is https://community.counseling.org/support/getting-started.
NASW opportunities can be chapter-specific. For example, the Metro DC chapter advertises a clinical supervision directory with complimentary member listings. That serves supervision searches; it should not be described as a nationwide consumer therapy directory. The checked source is https://naswmetrodc.socialworkers.org/Professional-Development/Clinical-Supervision-Directory. Look for your own chapter's public referral options and distinguish them from member networking tools.
State psychological, counseling, social work and MFT associations may include locators, referral lists or specialty groups. Ask whether the public can search without logging in, which membership tier qualifies, whether there is an extra charge and who updates the information. An old PDF list is harder to maintain than an editable public profile. Avoid joining an association solely for an unmeasured referral benefit; professional benefits may justify dues on their own.
Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Maps
Google's Business Profile page, accessed September 26, 2026, offers a “free Business Profile.” For an eligible practice, this is a useful way to maintain address, phone, hours and a website route in local search. Eligibility matters: a virtual-only practice should not invent an office or borrow an address to create local visibility. Check Google's current representation rules for your actual operating model before claiming a location.
Bing Places for Business offers free business listings in its indexed official material. Microsoft directs owners there to add or change Bing Maps information; the old signup address now redirects to Bing for Business. Check the existing listing before creating a duplicate. The official addresses checked were https://www.bingplaces.com/Home/Index and https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/bing/add-and-manage-your-business-listing. A redirect is not evidence that a paid agency is required.
Apple Business Connect's place-card tools moved into Apple Business in April 2026. Apple's March 24, 2026 announcement says the service would be “available as a free service.” The place-card and location-management functions are distinct from optional paid advertising and other upgrades. Update the practice's public information through the current Apple Business service rather than relying on an outdated Business Connect tutorial.
For all three, use the real public practice name, the correct appointment location and hours that reflect how people can reach you. Do not add a long list of search terms to the business name. A map listing is not permission to practice across state lines, and an online-only service does not become an in-person office because a map pin exists.
Yelp and Healthgrades: claiming is different from advertising
Yelp's official support entry, checked through indexed text on September 26, 2026, says “Claiming is free.” A claimed page lets a business correct details and use basic account tools; it does not mean the business buys ads. The direct page could not be retrieved during our check: https://www.yelp-support.com/article/What-is-a-claimed-business?l=en_US. Review the current account offer before accepting optional paid products.
Healthgrades' official profile resources describe claiming a free profile. Check that your professional category is supported and that an existing record actually belongs to you before attempting to claim it. Correct credentials, address and contact details first. Do not confuse the basic record with paid promotional services, and do not assume every license type has the same profile tools.
Both services can surface reviews. That creates work and confidentiality constraints even when the listing bill is zero. Correct inaccurate business facts through platform processes, but do not confirm a reviewer's status as a client in a public reply. A public accusation does not remove your professional obligations.
Zocdoc: free to join, paid for some bookings
Zocdoc's pricing help page, accessed September 26, 2026, says “There are no upfront fees or subscription costs to join Zocdoc.” That does not make every referral free. Its current model separates paid discovery bookings from free reputation bookings, such as certain existing-patient or practice-generated bookings. Booking fees vary with specialty and location, so there is no single therapist price to quote here.
The fee can arise at booking even if the person does not attend, subject to the platform's exceptions. Optional products can add charges. Get the applicable fee schedule and cancellation rules before enabling a booking channel. A profile without a monthly subscription can cost more than a conventional directory if it generates chargeable bookings. Compare attended appointments and collected revenue, not just the signup price.
Insurance panels' own directories
If you are already credentialed with an insurer, check its member-facing directory for your name, location, specialty, languages and availability. An included network listing can be more immediately relevant to an insured client than another general advertising profile. Confirm the listing terms with each insurer; we are not asserting a universal free-listing entitlement across all contracts.
Participation carries other costs: negotiated reimbursement, credentialing, billing and the contract's administrative requirements. Do not join a panel solely because its directory has no separate advertising invoice. Fixing an incorrect listing is worthwhile even when you are full, because a stale entry wastes clients' time and can create repeated unsuitable inquiries.
EMDRIA and Gottman: training alone does not mean free
EMDRIA's indexed homepage states that Full Members receive a “full-page profile listing” in its Find an EMDR Therapist directory. Treat that as a membership benefit, not an unconditional free listing for anyone who has completed training or certification. Confirm your category, dues and current eligibility. The checked source is https://www.emdria.org/; direct retrieval was unavailable during this research check.
The Gottman Referral Network is paid. Its professional page, accessed September 26, 2026, lists “$50 per month” for clinicians with Level 2 or Level 3 training and “$30 per month” for Gottman Certified Therapists. It also states degree, license and liability-insurance requirements. Certification can affect the price; it does not eliminate it. Those are specialized paid referral options to evaluate separately from free therapist listing sites.
Can Psychology Today be free through referrals?
Psychology Today's US join page, accessed September 26, 2026, states: “Get a free month with every colleague that joins from your invitation.” The standard listing remains $29.95 a month. This is an earned referral month, not an ongoing free profile or a standard signup trial. Ask how credits are applied and whether restrictions affect your account.
Invite a colleague only if the product seems appropriate for their practice, and disclose the credit you receive. Do not turn professional referrals into pressure to buy a directory. Our Psychology Today cost guide explains the ordinary annual expense, and is Psychology Today worth it gives a way to assess your own results.
What free advertising for therapists costs in practice
Time is the first cost. As an illustration, maintaining eight accounts for fifteen minutes each consumes two hours. That is planning arithmetic, not a measured industry average. Start with the listings your likely clients can actually use, then add accounts only when you can keep them accurate. Save a master record of credentials, public contact details and approved profile language.
Unwanted sales calls, spam and misleading inquiries are another cost. Use a professional contact channel and a safe intake process. Do not put clinical histories into a general marketing spreadsheet. Track the source and outcome with minimal information; keep clinical records in the appropriate system. HIPAA applies when marketing uses protected health information, and directory forms are not automatically suitable for sensitive disclosures.
Current-client testimonial solicitation is prohibited by ACA and AAMFT and restricted by APA and NASW. Check your current code and state board rules before any review request. Do not copy a client's public praise into your advertising on the assumption that public posting supplies permission. A free listing should not depend on conduct your professional rules prohibit.
A manageable order for your first listings
First correct existing insurer and eligible map records. Then create one accurate free therapist profile and activate any public locator already included in a membership you value. Record inquiries for a defined review period before adding more accounts. The best therapist directories guide provides a buying checklist if you later consider paying, while the Psychology Today alternatives comparison separates directories from insurance marketplaces.
Psychology.com runs a paid directory and publishes these practice guides. Its 30-day free trial is not an ongoing free listing: membership is then $49 a month or $490 a year, with no per-lead fees. The same distinction should apply to every vendor, including us. Keep a useful free channel for its contribution to your practice, not simply because creating another account feels like progress.
Key takeaways
- Separate ongoing free listings from trials, membership benefits and booking-fee platforms.
- Open Path suits a planned reduced-fee service, not an exclusively full-fee campaign.
- Use map listings only when your actual practice meets the platform’s eligibility rules.
- Current-client testimonial requests can violate professional codes even on a free platform.
- Maintain a small set of accurate profiles and measure suitable inquiries.
Distinguish a free trial from a free listing
Psychology.com is free for 30 days, then $49 a month or $490 a year, with no per-lead fees. Review the membership terms before starting.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free platform like Psychology Today?
TherapyDen offers an ongoing free profile, but its FAQ says free profiles are not included in TherapyDen search results; search inclusion is $30 a month. Open Path has no therapist listing fee but serves a reduced-fee model. Neither price finding establishes equivalent traffic or referrals in your area.
Is Inclusive Therapists free for therapists?
We could not verify a generally available free directory tier. Its indexed information distinguishes a free Scholar Membership from a directory profile. Ask about sponsored membership eligibility and renewal terms.
Is Zocdoc free for therapists?
It has no upfront or subscription charge to join in the checked basic offer, but certain discovery bookings carry fees. Optional services may cost extra. Read your specialty and location fee schedule.
Are association therapist directories free?
Some have no additional listing charge for eligible members. Membership dues, license requirements and public-search eligibility still matter. A private member directory is not the same as a consumer locator.
Can I ask current clients to review my free listing?
Do not assume that you can. ACA and AAMFT prohibit current-client testimonial solicitation, while APA and NASW restrict it. Check the rules applicable to your license and protect confidentiality in any response.
Should I create every free profile I can find?
Only if you can keep them accurate and the audience fits. Correct existing records first, then add one channel at a time. Count staff time and unsuitable inquiries as part of the cost.
