Continuing education for marriage and family therapists

Choose MFT continuing education that reflects relational practice and meets your license’s rules. A course’s relevance to couples or families does not establish its approval status. Check who offers the credit, the delivery format, and the specific subject designation before adding it to a renewal plan.

Which approval routes matter for LMFTs?

There is no single approval label to substitute for checking your state. California’s Board of Behavioral Sciences recognizes specified approval agencies, including CAMFT, APA, ASWB, and NBCC, along with other acceptable provider routes. AAMFT and certain other organizations also appear within the BBS provider framework. Check whether the statement concerns an approval agency or an organization offering the course. The California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, CAMFT, maintains a CE provider approval program. Its provider directory can help verify a claimed approval. CAMFT and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, AAMFT, are different organizations; membership in either should not be treated as a course approval statement. For New York, use the Department’s MFT-specific continuing education rules and approved-provider information. Do not substitute another profession’s NYSED provider number or a national organization’s logo. NYSED MFT continuing education.

How the catalog connects with relational practice

Our planned Ethics and Professional Boundaries course, proposed three hours, considers confidentiality, multiple roles, public encounters, and consultation. In relational work, the clinical question includes whose information is involved and what the treatment arrangement permits. The course develops that reasoning rather than supplying one release rule for every family.

AI in Clinical Practice, proposed three hours, addresses recordings, consent, privacy, and generated-note review. A family-session summary needs careful attention to who said what and whether information from multiple participants is being processed appropriately. The final ethics designation and license eligibility remain subject to approval.

Suicide Assessment and Safety Planning, proposed six hours, develops individual assessment and collaborative planning, including appropriate support involvement. A partner’s availability does not replace the clinician’s assessment or establish that involving that partner is safe.

The full catalog also includes planned telehealth, trauma-informed assessment, documentation, cultural-responsiveness, CBT, and supervisor learning. Choose according to your competence and role. A general course does not certify you in a trauma therapy or establish initial supervisor eligibility.

Texas MFT requirements addresses LMFT renewal and the relevant ethics, cultural, telehealth, and supervision considerations. Follow the MFT-specific renewal guidance, rather than borrowing LPC rules.

Keep one-time training separate from recurring requirements. Also distinguish a course with relevant content from a course accepted for a named mandate. A three-hour ethics activity cannot be treated as six hours, and one state’s acceptance does not decide another state’s treatment of the same certificate.

Ethics in Everyday Practice is our planned free one-hour activity on confidentiality and communication decisions. It includes the learning, assessment, and any eligible certificate at no charge, with email delivery planned after completion. No purchase of another course is required.

Approvals are in progress. The free activity is not currently represented as accepted LMFT credit, and its eventual use depends on the posted approval statement and your board’s rules. Before renewal, retain the certificate, relevant course information, and approval statement. Verify reporting separately from email delivery. A completion record should support the exact category and hours you claim, not simply show that you studied a related subject.
