In short
Compare coaching certification programs only after sorting them by what stands behind the certificate. The International Coaching Federation accredits programs at Level 1 (60 to 124 hours, toward the ACC credential) and Level 2 (125 to 175 hours, toward the PCC); the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching approves health coach programs whose graduates may sit its board exam; the Professional Association of ADHD Coaches accredits a handful of ADHD schools. The 15 programs below run from $2,848 to $16,500, quoted from each school's own page, and the gap between the cheapest and the dearest Level 2 program is wider than the gap between the levels. Check every claim on the ICF and NBHWC directories before paying.
What does a coaching certification program actually certify?
Every coaching school hands you a certificate at the end. The question that decides what it is worth is whether anyone outside the school will vouch for it.
Three bodies in the United States accredit or approve coach training so that the training counts toward a credential a client can check: the International Coaching Federation (ICF), whose credentials are the ACC, PCC and MCC; the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC), which issues the NBC-HWC board certification; and the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE), which issues the Board Certified Coach (BCC) and keeps its own list of approved providers. A fourth, the Professional Association of ADHD Coaches (PAAC), accredits ADHD coach training and issues ADHD-specific credentials.
No US state licenses life coaches. That is why these bodies matter: the credential is voluntary, so a school's accreditation is the only thing that connects a certificate to a public registry. This page is the catalog view of the coaching guides: fifteen programs in one table, grouped by what their accreditation leads to. The guide to life coach certification explains the decision; this page lays out the market.
What the table does not do
It does not rank. The schools are grouped by accreditation level, then listed by quoted price within each group. No school is named the best, because the right program depends on the credential you want, the hours you can give it and the money you can afford to lose if you stop.
Our October 2026 Ahrefs pull put "coaching certification" and its program-comparison variants at about 8,000 US searches a month, and most of the pages that answer them are paid to list one school first. This one is not. Psychology.com has no commercial relationship with any school named on this page as of October 17, 2026; if that changes, it will be disclosed here. How Psychology.com earns money is set out on our how we make money page.
When I compare school websites side by side, the first thing I notice is how many of them put the ICF logo next to a program that is only approved for continuing education hours. The level is the fact that matters, and it is printed on ICF's directory, not on the brochure.
How do you read an accreditation claim before you compare prices?
Accreditation attaches to a program, not to a school. A school can hold ICF Level 2 accreditation for its flagship and sell four other courses that are accredited for nothing. Read the claim with four questions.
- Which body? "ICF accredited" means the training counts toward an ICF credential. "NBHWC approved" means graduates may apply to sit the national board exam. "CCE approved provider" means the hours count toward the BCC. "PAAC accredited" means the ADHD training meets PAAC's standard. "Internationally accredited" by a body you have never heard of means nothing you can check.
- Which level? ICF's Level 1 page, accessed October 17, 2026, requires "60-124 student coach-specific contact learning hours" and a performance evaluation "at the ACC minimum skill level"; Level 2 requires "125-175 student coach-specific contact learning hours" and an evaluation "at the PCC minimum skill level." A program accredited only for Continuing Coach Education (CCE) hours renews a credential you already hold; ICF describes CCE as "perfect for students interested in new learning opportunities, and professional development, or those who are renewing their ICF credential." It does not by itself open the Level 1 or Level 2 path.
- Which program? Match the words on the accreditation badge to the name of the course on the invoice.
- Is it current? Accreditation lapses and is renewed. ICF's Education Search Service and NBHWC's approved program list show the current state; the school's page shows the state on the day it was last edited.
15 accredited coaching certification programs compared
Every figure is quoted from the school's own program, pricing, tuition or FAQ page on the date in the Checked column; where a page does not publish a figure, the cell says so. Hours are the school's stated contact or education hours.
The groups are ICF Level 1 toward the ACC, ICF Level 2 toward the PCC (several of these schools also run a Level 1 track), NBHWC approved health coach programs, and ADHD specialists holding both ICF and PAAC accreditation. Executive and leadership tracks sit inside the Level 2 group.

Three things the table shows that the brochures do not. The Level 1 route costs $3,949 to $4,950 at the three schools that sell it on its own, and the full Level 2 route $7,700 to $16,500, with the two university-branded programs at the top. NBHWC approved health programs are cheaper than ICF Level 2 programs by a wide margin, $2,848 to $5,500, because NBHWC approval requires a minimum of 50 training hours rather than 125. And ADHD specialty training is the dearest category per hour, because it stacks an ICF accredited program and an ADHD curriculum into one tuition.
Refund terms are the column to read twice. Coach Training EDU prorates, Lumia gives fourteen days minus a deposit, Duke keeps ten percent, Hudson's cancellation fee rises to the full tuition inside two weeks, and four schools publish no refund terms at all on the page that publishes the price.
Why the hours are not all the same hours
Schools count differently. iPEC's 160 hours and Georgetown's 148.5 are contact hours across a whole Level 2 program; Co-Active splits its path into ACC-level and PCC-level stages and sells them separately; Wellcoaches counts its mentoring and skills assessment as a module with its own price; iACTcenter's 124 hours exclude the one-on-one mentor coaching you contract separately. When two programs look the same price, ask each for its ICF-reported coach-specific contact hours and the mentor coaching included, then divide.
How do you verify a school's accreditation on the ICF and NBHWC sites?
Both bodies publish the list. Checking takes five minutes and should be done the day before you pay, because the school's page can be months out of date.
- ICF: open the Education Search Service, which ICF describes on its Find Coaching Education page, accessed October 17, 2026, as "a free, searchable directory of coaching education programs accredited by ICF." Filter by program type: Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, CCE or AATC (team coaching). Search the school's name and read the program name and level that comes back. If the course you are buying is not listed at the level the school claims, ask the school for its accreditation letter before you pay.
- NBHWC: open the Find an Approved Training Program page. It states, accessed October 17, 2026, that "NBHWC Approved Training Program status indicates that a program has met NBHWC educational standards and requirements," offers a downloadable list of approved programs, and warns that approval does not endorse a program's business practices. Confirm the program name, not just the school, and check that its approval has not expired.
- CCE: the BCC requirements page lists the approved coach training providers whose hours count toward the credential.
- PAAC: its FAQ, accessed October 17, 2026, states that "PAAC does not provide ADHD Coach training" and names the training organizations it has accredited.
Once you hold the credential, the same lookups work in reverse: ICF's Verify a Coach returns a holder's level and standing, NBHWC and CCE publish holder directories, and the Verified Coach Standard checks against those registries. The how we verify page explains the checks Psychology.com runs.
Which program type fits which kind of coaching?
Pick the credential first and the school second. The groups in the table map onto the coaching niches people actually search for.
- General life coaching: ICF Level 1 for the ACC, Level 2 for the PCC. The guide to ICF certification explains the hours, mentor coaching, exam and fees for each.
- Health and wellness coaching: an NBHWC approved program, then the national board exam. The health coach certification guide compares nine approved schools and draws the scope line around nutrition and medical advice.
- Executive and leadership coaching: a Level 2 program with an executive track, because the enterprise coaching platforms treat the PCC as a hiring gate. The executive coaching certification guide quotes what those platforms require.
- ADHD coaching: an ICF accredited ADHD school, ideally one PAAC also accredits, then the ICF credential and a PAAC credential. The ADHD coach certification guide compares ADDCA, iACTcenter, JST and MentorCoach.
- Career coaching: CCE's BCC if you hold a relevant degree, otherwise an ICF path plus a career-specific course. See the career coach certification guide.
What does the credential cost on top of tuition?
Tuition buys the training. The credential is a separate purchase from the body, and the two together are the real price of being checkable. Fees below are quoted from each body's own pages, accessed October 17, 2026.
| Credential | Body | Training it requires | Application and exam fee (quoted) | Renewal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ACC | ICF | Level 1 or Level 2 program, or 60+ hours by portfolio | "$175 USD" member, "$325 USD" non-member on the Level 1 or 2 path | Every three years, 40 CCE units; "$175 USD" member, "$275 USD" non-member |
| PCC | ICF | Level 2 program, or 125+ hours by portfolio | "$375 USD" member, "$525 USD" non-member on the Level 2 path | Same three-year cycle |
| NBC-HWC | NBHWC | An NBHWC approved program plus "50 Health Coaching Sessions" | "$100" application, "$400" exam | Continuing education on a cycle set by NBHWC |
| BCC | CCE | 30 to 120 hours from a CCE approved provider, by degree route | "$279" application and exam | "$40" annual maintenance |
| CACP and PCAC | PAAC | PAAC accredited training or portfolio; 60 or 250 ADHD coaching hours | $250 on the school path; $450 cohort and $650 portfolio for the PCAC | Continuing education units per PAAC's CEU page |
What should make you walk away?
Price alone should not. Four things should.
- The accreditation is not in the directory. If ICF's search or NBHWC's list does not show the program at the level claimed, the claim is marketing until proven otherwise.
- The price on the page is not the price on the invoice. Deposits, materials fees, mandatory assessments and mentor coaching sold separately can add a fifth to the quoted tuition. Ask for the all-in figure in writing.
- The refund policy is not published. Of the fifteen schools above, four give a price without a refund line. That is legal and common; it is also the moment to ask, and to get the answer in writing.
- Clinical promises. A program that teaches you to "treat" or "heal" anything is teaching you to work outside the scope a coach is allowed. Every credential body's ethics code, and the signed scope commitment in the Verified Coach Standard, requires a coach to refer clinical concerns to licensed care; the therapist directory on this site is where those referrals go.
