How coaches are checked

Coaching is not a licensed profession, so there is no state board to check. What we check is the registry credential, by hand, with the date on the profile. Every coach signs the scope commitment before the profile goes live.

  1. Registry credential

An ICF credential (ACC, PCC or MCC) at the ICF registry, NBC-HWC at the NBHWC directory, BCC at CCE, an EIA at EMCC or an AC accreditation, checked at the issuing registry and rechecked every six months.

  2. Scope commitment

Coaching is not therapy, counseling, treatment or diagnosis; clinical concerns are referred to licensed care; clients are adults only. The date the coach signed is shown on the profile.

  3. Said plainly

A coach without a registry credential can still be listed; their certifications show as self-reported with no verified mark. Not checked: government identity, insurance, criminal background, client outcomes, review authenticity, or specialties beyond the credential. How coaches are listed →

Frequently asked questions

What does a business coach do?

Business coaches work with owners and founders on strategy, pricing, growth, hiring and the habits that keep a business running. Coaching is not therapy: a coach does not assess, diagnose or treat a mental health condition, and refers clinical concerns to licensed care.

Are business coaches on Psychology.com verified?

We check the registry credential (ICF, NBHWC, CCE, EMCC or AC) by hand at the issuing registry and show it on the profile with the date; it is rechecked every six months. A coach without a registry credential can still be listed, with certifications shown as self-reported. Every coach has signed the scope commitment: not therapy, clinical concerns referred, adults only.

Is a business coach the same as a therapist?

No. Therapists are licensed mental health professionals and can treat a condition; coaches work with adults on goals, habits and decisions. Coaches are listed in their own section here, and never in the therapist directory. If you are not sure which you need, read our guide on choosing between a life coach and a therapist.
